Back in saddle: Cancer victim’s amazing recovery

Pat Smith: Back in saddleBy David Powell

A woman has told how she battled back to health after treatment for a golf ball-sized tumour in her neck.

Pat Smith, 63, endured 30 chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions, leaving her neck looking “like a turkey’s”.

Now the grateful retired civil servant’s husband Hadyn, 66, a guitarist, is playing a concert to raise money for North Wales cancer treatment centre.

As Pat reflects: “There can be life after cancer” and told how her love of horse riding helped give her a goal during her ordeal. She dotes on her horse Bubbles, kept at Aberconwy Equestrian Centre near their home.

“I wondered ‘Would I ever ride her again?’ It helps to have a focus although I don’t have the stamina I used to.”
